What kind of loss are you dealing with?

Roof, siding, windows, or interior damage caused by hurricane or windstorm.

Hurricane / wind damage

Generally covered

Wind is a covered peril on a standard Florida homeowners (HO-3) policy. Hurricane losses are paid after your separate hurricane deductible is met — that deductible is a percentage of your dwelling coverage, not a flat dollar amount.

Watch out: Wind-driven RAIN that enters through a wind-created opening is usually covered. Rain or water that enters an already-failing roof, or rising water, is not. The cause of entry decides the claim.
Your deductible

Hurricane deductible: typically 2% of dwelling (Coverage A). On a $400k home that is ~$8,000 before payment begins.

Good to know
  • Your hurricane deductible applies once per hurricane season, not per storm.
  • Get the carrier's estimate in writing and compare it line-by-line to your contractor's.
